Need a New CPA? – Petoskey MI

Top Warning Signs That You Need A New CPA for Your Business

Unfortunately there are times when you will discover that a business relationship is less than what you had hoped for, and other times when you simply outgrow your current advisor. Due to the important role a CPA plays in a business you need to know when it’s time to look for a new accountant.

Here are the top warning signs that you should start looking for a new CPA:

1. They are so busy, there’s no time to talk. When you call he is unavailable and doesn’t return your calls. This can become more than just a minor inconvenience when you need your accountants input before making a time sensitive business decision.

2. All the wrong experience. Your CPA is not familiar with the tax laws that apply to your unique circumstances and therefore can’t help you create a proactive business strategy.

3. You’re not updated. There is a tax law change that disallows a deduction that you typically take but your CPA doesn’t mention it until “tax time.” You want someone who informs you of tax law changes as soon as possible so you can plan ahead and make more informed choices.

4. It’s a seasonal operation. Working with a seasonal tax preparer may seem like a great idea until you are audited in August.

5. Your CPA is only interested in your taxes. You only discuss taxes, but that is not all that a CPA can offer. You can rely on the advice of a CPA for financial goal setting, managing payroll decisions and evaluating software. A professional CPA should also have many liaisons in the community. When you need help outside of the scope of their work they should be able to refer you to a company well liked by other businesses.

6. Your communication styles clash. Sure your CPA is experienced, proactive and savvy but you dread meeting with them so much you procrastinate, and then require a tall coffee to stay awake for the 90 minutes of torture. If you’re not on the same page find someone who’s easier for you to communicate with. You will be more likely to ask for (and follow) their recommendations and will be better off for it.

If you can identify with one or more of the statements above all to well, it’s a good time to start interviewing accountants to find one that better suits your needs. Start by scheduling a few initial consultations. See  “How to Find a Quality CPA”
